Gonorrhea is the second most commonly reported STD in the United States. 300,000 cases were reported in 2011. The incidence of reported gonorrhea among blacks is 17 times the rate among whites. 4 II. Neissera is usually found in the upper respiratory tract of humans, Neissera gonorrhoeae is never part of the normal flora. The bacterium is only found after sexual contact with an infected person (or direct contact). In the vocabulary of public health and medical microbiology Neissera Gonorrhoeae is referred to “gonococcus”. III. Gonorrhea is a prevalent sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacterium Neissera Gonorrhoeae. Infections are acquired by sexual contact and usually affect the mucous membranes of the urethra. It grows in warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract, including the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes in women, and in the urethra in men. It can also grow in the mouth, throat, and anus. 1 IV. In the United States, the highest reported rates of the infection are among sexually active teens, young adults, and African Americans. No known deaths have been reported in the U.S. V. A. Host Characteristics 1. The disease mostly affects teen girls from the ages 15-19 and young women 20-24. 2. Gonorrhea affects both sexes, but more in women than men. 3. The US is mostly affected with gonorrhea. 4. Gonorrhea affects more single people than people who are married because they have many sex partners. 5. The ethnic group that seems to be affected more with the disease is African Americans. B. Environmental Areas 1.
