Going Green: A Way of Life “There are no passengers on Spaceship Earth. We are all crew.” There is truth hidden in this quote by Marshal McLuhan. To properly sum it up, this is telling inhabitants of earth that we all have a duty to care for the planet. We have the ability to make an impact every day, but the important part is the way one makes an impact, whether or not our actions have a positive or negative affect on the planet. Like a spaceship, the Earth has the potential to reach great new heights, but this all depends on the crew. The planet we call home has been around for quite some time, about four billion years to be exact. The Earth is unique, unlike other planets, it's teeming with life. The reasons why the earth is able to support life are that it’s the correct distance from the sun, the protection it receives from the atmosphere, and the fact that it is covered with water (Burnie). But the unfortunate truth is that the earth isn’t how it used to be. Over billions of years, the it has gone through various changes, some were natural processes, but others weren’t. Nevertheless, to help solve many of these issues that face the Earth, a movement called going green has developed. Going green is all about embracing a lifestyle that strives to create a better world for everyone and everything. Going green isn’t just an environmental movement, it’s a way of life. The earth has been negatively impacted by our actions in various ways. For example, the use of energy creates environmental problems. “Over the last 200 years the worlds population has used more energy than the entire human race did in the previous 50,000 years“ (Burnie). This startling statistic tells us the human race consumes a substantial amount of energy, perhaps more than is actually needed.
