Going, Going, Gone! Allison Gill 9th Grade East Coweta High School Page 1 Abstract Have you ever wondered why Baseball and softball is played in the summer instead of the winter? The first answer to pop into your head is probably “Well, it’s too cold in the winter to be playing an outside sport.” Think about it for a second. Is there a chance it’s played in the summer because the temperature of the ball from the weather effects how far it goes? That is the purpose of this experiment. If the ball is warmer, then the ball will go a further distance. To test this experiment I purchased 9 softballs. I kept 3 of the at regular room temperature, put 3 of the balls into a bucket of ice for 24 hours, and put 3 in the microwave for 5 minutes. After this had gone by, I went to Mountain Park Park. With a bat I hit one ball and measured until all the balls had been hit. Using a chart I recorded all distances each ball had been hit under the categories of cold, hot, and regular. After doing this I averaged them out to find which type of ball on average went further. After observing, experimenting, and research I found that when the balls are in warmer conditions they go a further distance then in cold conditions. When softballs are in cold conditions they are as hard as a rock making it harder for them to bounce of a bat. When they are hotter the ball gets get a mush feeling to it and can bounce of the bat and go a lot further. In conclusion, if the ball is at a hotter temperature, then it will go a further distance.
