Small farmers benefit from consumers who choose them over Stop & Shop’s aisles of imports, and these small farmers are getting help from the government. When you buy local more money stays in the community. This would not be the case however if you bought from a big food chain which sends the money out all over the place. For local business owners, the money that is spent locally will eventually find its way back to them which in return helps strengthen the local economy and helps local businesses thrive and grow. While some argue that buying local threatens small farmers elsewhere in the world, they ignore that if everyone bought local food, everyone’s local economies would improve.
An example of this would be the local Southern Maryland Food Bank. Advantages of the Southern Maryland Local Food Bank is that local pantries are more connected to the people, so the volunteer organizations go to the local food pantries to donate their time and money. Some examples include the Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen at St. Paul’s Church, the Lifestyles of Maryland Food Pantry, and the Immaculate Heart of Mary Food Pantry. Some disadvantages to using a local food pantry is that local food pantries mainly rely on donations from outside organizations. Local food pantries don’t have the funds that the state and national government programs
Since no one accepted a realistic proposal he offered, “a young healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food.”He was suggesting that poor Irish families could sell their children as food to the wealthy for money. His satirical proposal was meant to mock the heartless attitudes towards the poor and British policy in Ireland. In this proposal, Swift also wanted to search for a solution for, “preventing the children of poor people in Ireland from being a burden to their parents or country.” Life was so difficult that begging was the only way families could survive. The streets were filled with mothers who begged for money or food for their children. Children would usually be sold as slaves, become thieves, or leave Ireland to fight.
First, a National Policy on food can save millions of Americans residents by investing resource to guarantee that food marketing sets children up for healthful lives by instilling in them a habit of eating real food because of unnatural diseases that attack the body are causing many lives and sickness. Bittman et al states, “Today’s children are expected to live shorter lives than their parents. In a large part, this is because a third of these children will develop Type 2 diabetes, formally rare in children and a preventable disease that reduces life expectancy by several years” (1). The consumption of high fructose corn syrup is affecting our health. Corn syrup has a high in sugar, which will develop into Type 2 diabetes within time.
A well-nourished child would weigh up to 28 pounds, which is good for a two person meal. Selling babies to the more fortunate was a win situation for both parties, the poor would have money in their pocket with less to worry about. On, the other hand the rich would have a good healthy meal out of the
However, NSW being an undeveloped colony trading goods was more common than money. This introduced a system which allowed fair trading, one of the exchange stats that ‘if a customer insisted on paying for her loaf of bread in wheat rather than coins, the price could be no more than two and a half pounds of wheat for the standard large loaf.’ Additionally, the early settlers have focused on their agriculture and tried to improve their livestock and methods as do government institutions. ‘Oxen were hired out to farmers who owned a plough or a cart’ this was presented as an encouragement to advance the colony’s development by producing larger quantity of food utilizing more innovative and efficient techniques. Another instance where NSW functions as a government institution is the owning and distribution of land. The NSW government were in charge of directing ‘the granting of land to new settlers and the resale of that land’.
6/7/2012 Paper #3 A New Form of Helping the Economy A modest proposal written by Jonathan Swift does carry merit in regard to balancing the economic problems that have surfaced in Ireland. Swift comes up with an idea which has to do with selling poor children in order to help the economy by providing people with more food and better nutrition. Swifts ideals of using poor children as a new form of meat to be sold at markets is definitely one possible way of solving the economic crisis. He states many valid points in regard to how selling poor children will benefit the economy as a whole. The six benefits listed by Swift are all plausible ideals that are widely wished for and they would give the economy a very good advantage.
Children from poor families could be sold into a meat market at the age of one, which would decrease overpopulation and unemployment, sparing families the expense of child-bearing while providing them with a little extra income, improving dining of the wealthy, and contributing to the overall economy. Raising children for food will give the Irish economy a boost. These kids are delicacies, and delicacies can be expensive. The culinary experience will make Ireland a hot spot for tourists. He suggests some recipes for preparing this delicious new meat, and he feels sure that top cooks will be able to generate more.
IRWP Food stamps have been America’s first line of defense against hunger since 1977. The program has helped countless people put food on the table and get out of poverty. Especially because of the recent economic problems, many people struggle to support themselves, let alone feed themselves and their families. We should allow the food stamp program to continue because it ensures people will get the nutrition they need, helps people put food on the table, boosts local economies, and supports those who are on a low budget. In her article “Food Stamps Should Be Expanded”, Linda Bopp states “More than 25 million Americans, including at least 13 million children, are not able to meet the most fundamental of human needs.” How can 25 million people go without food when America is one of the wealthiest and developed nations in the world?
Not everyone can be rich like Bill Gates, but not everyone wants to be. All families want in America are ways to allow food to be put on the table without having to work 2 or more jobs, which now a days is hard to find. Danny and his family deserves ways to help their daughter who is sick. Way to put food in the mouth of their other family members and they deserve an understanding. Danny you deserves a raise, more than just ten cents but a raise that will actually help your family make it day to day.
