I see my friends getting good jobs and pursuing their education and I was a sixteen year old mother with nothing to look forward to. My life have change so much and my goal was to go back to school and complete my education. For the past three years my mother and brothers always encouraged me to continue where I left off. Finally one day I decided to reapply to a secondary school to complete in education. I try looking for a job first to take care of my daughter and pay for my finances but that wasn’t successful.
I dropped out of school when I had my first child and I didn’t get my high school diploma until I had my 3th child. I was very determined to at least get my high school diploma that was a successful day when I received my High School Diploma. My next challenge was to go to college staying focused. I’ve been part of activities and would stop right in the middle, only because either it wasn’t interesting or I would get frustrated. But I came to find out that it was not a great idea to start something and not finish, only because it would start to become a habit and your life would always be flip flop, plus it wasn’t a good example.
Most things do not happen the way we expected and, I did not start college a year after high school. Instead I was married with a baby on the way. I still wanted to return to school but, did not know how I could. I was not sure if I could afford it or, with the baby on the way, that I would have time. Once I had my son, I had to start work to afford all the things a baby requires.
Unfortunately, after a couple years, I had to take some time off. But, I never lost sight of that Bachelors Degree. So, after 9 years, I decided to come back to school last semester to finish the units I need to transfer to CSUN. I commonly get asked, "Why would you want to go back after all this time?" And it makes me think of my childhood when I used to attend night classes with my mother.
Jim Keenan English 101 It Puts The Lotion In The Basket As most kids gradually start to read more and more as they mature, I was one of the few who didn't learn to enjoy reading until senior year of highschool. The teachings of Tom Alessandri were the sole cause of my newfound appreciation for literature. All it takes is the inspiration of one individual to turn someone onto reading and writing. Tom Alessandri was the last highschool English teacher I had, taking his Science Fiction & Horror Literature class. While many people would be discouraged by the title of the class alone, I was intrigued and immediately signed up.
As I became the proper age to apply for jobs, my parents gave me extremely well advice to not work for family or friends. This advice has stayed with me throughout the years. After working at my current job, I can now understand why. My first job I had was at a retail store which was about half an hour from where I lived. I would have to leave about an hour before my shift started just in case there was any traffic.
From the beginning of my school career, my elders always stressed the importance of education. Throughout high school, I never understood why an education was so important, I often would goof off or not take my studies seriously. While most high school graduates are deciding where to go to college and what to study, I decided to focus on raising a family. When my youngest child turned three, I finally entered the workforce. This is when I realized how important a college education really was.

Obtaining a college degree is important to me because it would enable me have many opportunities to provide a secure future for my family. I have been unemployed for almost 3 years and all vacancies in the newspaper require at least a first degree. With all those college and university graduates these days it’s so competitive in the job market. Although a college education was emphasized all throughout my high school years the motivation wasn't there until I had a baby. I realized that I was no longer living for myself.
I tried going to alternative school while working and pregnant but that did not last but a semester either. I was to worried about what my child’s father was doing that I also quit going to that school. Six months after having my first child I ended up pregnant with my second one. I knew from then that I had no chance of ever going back. So I got married at 17 and started just playing the house wife and mom, till it came to me having to find a job.
