The global prawn industry has had a very large impact on people. We need to be aware of what is going on and the effect that it has, not only on the consumers but also the laborers. It is important to study the sociological impact so that we can figure out what to do, how to shape the policies, and to think critically. If you look at the effect that the global prawn industry has on not only Thailand but on the other countries that they sell too that is macrosociology. The way they interact with each other would be microsociology When eating shrimp, if you think about the laborers who caught it, and how they were trafficked and beaten it really makes you second guess yourself as a Christian. First, these laborers are sold and held on what they call “Ghost ships.” They are forced to stay there and fish for shrimp which are then sold to global retailers like, Walmart, Costco, Tesco, and Carrefour. These slaves do not get paid and are sometimes forced to work for years. They have been threatened to be beaten, and even killed if they do not do what they are told. I believe this issue all comes down to sociological imagination. You can see the impact it has on the laborer and the life they are having to live, and then the consumer, the people buying and eating this shrimp knowing that there were slaves who were bought and forced to do this. Second, after not only being sold into the prawn industry, they are beaten and threatened to die. This causes a lot of dysfunctions. One being that they are severely harmed, and also they are not being fed, cared for, and treated with respect. Some of the men who escaped the boats told about the terrible conditions, they were beaten on a regular everyday basis even when they had worked very hard.
