The anger between two major powers, the United States and the Soviet Union, caused the start of the Cold War. The Cold War is a war without the use of weapons. This war began between 1945 and 1950. The United States and the Soviet Union wanted to influence many worldwide and spread their differing ideologies. World War II contributed to the Cold War which influenced the “Iron Curtain”. The Iron curtain divided West and Eastern Europe. The Soviets controlled the East under a communist government, where the society had no rights, and the United States controlled the West under a democratic government, where the society had rights. During the Cold War “weapons” increased which influenced the space to race where the United States and the Soviet Union explored the space with satellites and the Marshall Plan that was created to help democratic governments and decrease the spread of communism. The tension between the United States and the Soviet Union began to rise. Neither of them wanted to go to war because of the large amount of death that took place in World War II, therefore they thought of the Cold War. In document 3, it is stated that on June 5, 1947 a secretary of State Marshall’s explained his plan for the European’s recovery. The Marshall Plan was set up to build up governments and decrease the influence of communism. Europe needs a large amount of help because they faced heavy economic, political and social damage and this would affect the world at large. The Americans then helped out the Western part of Europe because of the great damage left from World War II. The Americans offered to help out the East side of Europe but Stalin rejected. During the Cold War the United States and the Soviet Union fought indirectly by having a space race. The Soviet Union was the first to make it into space and the first to launch a satellite called the Sputnik, which
