As being posited by the National Academy of Sciences National Academy of Engineering Institute of Medicine of the National Academies (2006),one of the most recognized factor that has an impact on the slower than expected assent into leadership in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine is the perseverance of assumptions and stereotypes that women are essentially “communal” or “dependent” and “passive”, and therefore, lack the capacity to succeed as leaders. According to Hill, Corbett and St. Rose (2010) along with Valian (1998), stereotype-based cognitive biases about gender supply to women’s underrepresentation in professions traditionally occupied by men, in multiple ways: they disadvantage women in review processes critical for progression— women are underrated in assessment processes for leadership roles even by individuals who deliberately hold egalitarian beliefs and they influence women’s self-beliefs, causing them to self-select out of highly agentic roles such as leadership.
