However, through the simple act of planting a tree a person's life is forever remembered. A father is burying his first-born son. By burying hair and the umbilical cord with the tree, the tree becomes the son. This unification of man and nature becomes the pattern and running theme through the poem. The unification is presented through personification.
In December of 1903 Lawrence Exeter senior now buy’s toys for his newly born for Christmas. In 1909 Lawrence senior sends Lawrence Exeter junior to an all boy’s school. Lawrence senior buys his son his first bike when he was 7 years old. Son goes to a military academy when he is only 12 years old. When son was old enough his dad bought him a Cadillac for his first car in 1921.
This lens applies to chapter one of A Separate Peace. Old Gene is visiting his old school, Devon. He came back to visit two places from his childhood the tree and the Academy building. The text transfers to a flashback to Gene’s childhood and Phineas, also known as Finny, is introduced. Finny convinces Gene to jump out of a tree with him.

A sapling is a young tree; demonstrates strength, nurturing, and flexibility. Strength is the ability to be able to hold on to your wildest dreams. At the age of sixteen, I was told by my father that I wouldn’t make anything of myself. Today, I am now working on my second week at Tusculum. Through the “you can’t make it” and the “you’ll probably end up pregnant,” I’ve found the strength to move past all the negative and unnecessary comments from my father.
The men took the seeds and went off searching for the highest peak. It took weeks, finally they 60 had it, when they reached the peak they could see the entire island. They dug a hole and planted the seeds in. They waited eight years for the tree to grow full size, the men could see the tree from the bottom of the island. They took a long hike up the mountain to retrieve the leafs for Odysseus.
After his sisters get married, they go to live outside of Nova Scotia. Little time later, his father is sick and thus, the narrator (15 years old at that time) and his uncle have to work hard to prepare the boat for the “next season”. Therefore, he decides to drop off school but his father, who wished to be educated and to go to university rather than being a fisherman, doesn’t let him to do so even if the mother doesn’t agree with him. During summer, because his uncle has to leave “Jenny Lynn”, the boat, the narrator decides to work with his father for good, who becomes increasingly sick. On November twenty first, the father is killed because of the waves of the grey Atlantic which were too high at that period of time.
