The lack of education leads to further development of barriers such as a financial barrier and poor lifestyle that makes them unable to provide for themselves and their child. Most jobs that do not require a high school diploma only offer a minimum wage and do not offer adequate benefits to meet all medical needs. “key indicators of health, infant mortality rates and low-birth weight rates, were elevated when infants were born to mothers who were less educated” (Flores et al,1998). Considering that statement I believe that the biggest barrier affecting this vulnerable population’s health is education. Vulnerable mothers that do not finish getting their education become discouraged and loose the motivation and drive to tackle the oncoming challenges that life brings, creating for them another barrier on the micro level; it being a financial barrier.
Data published by NHS show that there is high number of measles reported due to 1-16 years old children who missed the vaccinations between 1990s and 2000s. In 2012 the numbers of cases was 2,000. The fears are now concerned on the MMR vaccination, as now there is also a big group of children who did not received their vaccination. NHS urge parents to ensure their children receive the vaccination. This shows that many parents are sceptical to the vaccinations, what might have negative consequences for children.
People are also reaching the time in their lives when medical problems tend to increase. When an adult reaches their senior years, some may need help at home, and as they age this tends to increase throughout the years. With America not being close as they were in the past, a lot of families are splitting up and leaving mom and dad alone. This creates a need for them when it comes to meals and physical care. So many people want to be independent but this actually creates a problem, more seniors are relying on community facilities or retirement homes to assist them with their daily living.
Unfortunately it doesn’t work like that. Research shows that parents of a child diagnosed with ASD either stop or reduce work compared to parents of a child that is not diagnosed with ASD. This is due to the fact that someone has to take care of the child and most times it is the parents that do so. The parents also have to drive the child to see different doctors in order to help treat the ASD even though there is no known treatment as of yet. This takes even more time out of their lives.
However, with the new act and its simplicity people are no longer trying to fix their marriages and are just getting divorced which leads to the breakdowns of many family units. For example, the divorce rate increased by 5% between 2009 and 2010. This can have terrible effects upon the family in particular any children the couple may share because a parents’ divorce can be an upsetting time and some children find it very difficult to handle. It can also affect the family because not all divorces are civil and it can leave the couple having bad relations and in custody battles the children can be deeply affected because in some cases only one parent has custody and they don’t allow the children to see the other parent therefore depriving them of a treasured bond within their life. The child benefit act also affects the institution of family.
Studies show that, low income home energy assistance program benefits seem to reach families at the highest social and medical risk with more food insecurities have higher rates of low birth weight children (Frank, 2006). The reason behind this is that the money for food is spent on the electric bill when no assistance is provided. In result many children are born with a low birth weight and some even experience a life line of hospital visits. Some children even have a hard time focusing in school because of the lack of energy. Children are blocked from living a somewhat normal life all because the household could not get the financial assistance needed in order to help with their electricity
The article “No Babies” by Russell Shorto discusses how the population in Europe is drastically decreasing because the low birth rate and higher death rate. He discusses how the birth to death rate is very unbalanced as well, which is a result of the declining population. European culture is feared be lost due to the fact that the majority of the European population is mainly made up of older generations and few younger. In the article Population “7 Billion”, Robert Kunzig discusses how the population worldwide is increasing drastically. He discusses that although the population is growing, our planet may not have all the resources it needs to accommodate the growing population.
In fact, 30 U.S. states today have nursing shortages. And by 2020, the government projects, 44 states plus the District of Columbia will have shortfalls. Many people don’t want to do this job anymore because it’s demanding work and can be dangerous. Diana Mason, editor in chief of the American Journal of Nursing says, “we will never have enough nurses unless we fix the work environment.” In order to address this problem, some facilities have tried out some different solutions, for example, more than 1,000 nurses from the Philippines were hired in the U.S. in the last five years. Other facilities are increasing salaries, and providing better hours and working conditions.
Stories of people dying because they had illnesses that were left undiagnosed due to not having insurance to seek healthcare are becoming more frequent. This by far is a good reason to impose universal coverage. Finding the funds to pay for universal coverage will be hard since many state budgets and the federal budgets face large
