Girls’ affair with the “Princesses” “What’s wrong with Cinderella?” by Peggy Orenstein speaks of a mother’s struggle through the princess era with her daughter’s obsession with princess culture (Orenstein, 2006). Orenstein who is a writer for The New York Times Magazine adopts an informative approach towards writing this article. Thus, I believe her intended audience would be her fellow mothers who, also, are falling into the royal moment. In this article, Orenstein blames both the marketers and mothers for the perpetual of the princess culture which she believed to have damaging consequences to the girls’ future development. She backs it up with the following statement “I worry about what playing Little Mermaid is teaching her” (Orenstein, 2006, para.10) implying that her doubts toward such play. Orenstein emphasizes the concern of the uprising princess trend through the statistics of the annual sales revenue generated from the sale of princess-related merchandise .Additionally, she sees the 25,000 princess merchandise available in the market as a threat that restricts child’s play as mention in her article “when one thing is so dominant, then it’s no longer a choice: it’s a mandate” (Orenstein, 2006, para.30) thus, parents ought to be wary of the craze before it becomes uncontrollable. Orenstein has narrowed her blame on the marketers and the mothers, holding these parties to be responsible for the girls’ love affair with the princesses. Nevertheless, in a minor portion of her article, I found value when she mentions princesses can be a role model for girls as stated “Princess can even be a boon to exasperated parents: royalty never whines and uses the potty every single time” (Orenstein, 2006, para.29). In view of this, I would argue that Orenstein fails to acknowledge that this culture trend is so influential that it continues to be reflected in the society.
