Douglas Coupland: Dangerous Behaviour of Teens Society has made it acceptable for teens to engage into dangerous behaviours, which harm the young population. Douglas Coupland’s Girlfriend in Coma, exhibits an example of how a teenager takes on harmful habits that hurts her and her surrounding peers, both physically and mentally. Girlfriend in coma shows an ideal example of how teenagers abuse their freedom, engaging in harmful habits such as, drinking and drug use, having unsafe sex, as well as asserting an inappropriate example for future generations, by altering the moral codes. Firstly, the character Pam displayed the consequences of her terrible habit of drinking and drug use. Secondly, Karen and Richard engage into a sexual relationship, which lead them to face adult problems later on. Thirdly, the aftermath of Karen and Richard’s behaviour led to a bad example for Megan, their daughter, who executes her parent’s behaviour in her teenage years. First of all, one of the characters who engages in harmful habit such as drinking and drug use, is Pam. Pam, who used to be a successful model, until she started drinking and using drugs. Drinking can cause health problems and the intoxication can result in dilemmas. By drinking too much at a young age, Pam loses her body figure, which causes her losing her job as a model. Other consequences include her losing her friends and falling behind in school, harming her health, causing family tension and facing financial problems. After all the damage had been done, Pam reflects back, stating, “I blew it all—a whole decade ranking in dough and not one effing penny…Clothes, Dinners, Drugs. More Drugs…” (Coupland 74). When Pam decides to start all over again, it becomes impossible for her to even think about starting a new life. An example of this is when Pam applies for college, to follow her dreams,
