Analyzing a Noncommercial Short Film: Gift The noncommercial short film “Gift” directed by Daniel Yam has important elements to analyze films, not only in terms of technical details, but also for its strong and deep message related with feelings and values. Thus, Gift is a good example of how flashback, genre, plot, décor, and costume can be used to produce a high quality movie with a good message to modern society. This movie allows the audience to perceive that money is not all in life but the power of sharing what you have and helping others to be successful, is in the end, what really makes you rich. In fact, one of the most significant elements that determines the way how the argument is going to be developed during the movie consist on the flashback technique. With this element, the audience can perceive that the story is about something that occurred in the past; for example, when the main character remembered when a photo of his father fell in the floor (0:08). In this way, the movie develops the story by going to the past and then returning to the present time, creating a type of ellipsis by playing with time in order to show the events as a learned lesson. The main character was a stubborn person when he was a child, he did not understand the reasons why his father worked in all the kind of jobs available in the city, the child used to say that he did not like his father. But this is the main thesis of the movie, when he asked his father why they were not rich (1:43), his father gave to him the most important lesson of his life, being rich is not about how much you have but how much you give (1:48). Another important element of the movie is the genre. Gift is a short noncommercial movie that develops the plot by using the drama genre.
