LP Assignment Getting old According to the longevity quiz on page 162 of Life Span Human Development text, there are reasons to believe that there will be more than 300,000 people in the United States over the age of 100. Adding and subtracting years to our life based on the activities in your life, education, sleep, health, family background and stress in your life can give you a rough estimate on the age you will live to be. There are many things you can do in your younger years and as you age to prevent declines of your abilities. You can increase your awareness of diet and habits, make the changes and prevent thing such as, osteoporosis. Walking, running and jogging three to four times a week will decrease osteoporosis, and you should increase calcium intake. “Those with a college degree live long and were more likely to remain independent. The risk of death among college educated persons was lower at every age in recent Nun studies in 1986 by David Snowdon” 1(p. 168). As they maintain healthy eating habits, live in a good environment, light exercise and are educated. Everything you do in adolescents and adulthood factor how well you age or how fast you decline going into your elderly years. “Excessive abuse to the body, such as alcohol consumption, high fat diet and smoking are all examples of abuse to the body resulting in poor functioning in old age.”1 “The message to take away from such research is that both physical and mental activity, along with a positive attitude can help slow down the effects of aging on both the body and the brain. We can’t avoid the biological reality of aging, but we can make choices across the life span that will increase the odds of aging successfully.”1 , doing this is going to be making aging a much better experience. You need exercise to improve cardiovascular and respiratory functions; it slows bone loss and strengthens
