Getting Your Mind Back: Fight Against Alzheimer ’s disease and Dementia Savanna Wynn SWK 281: PSYCHOLOGY OF AGING Due Date October 29, 1010 As we age, there are many concerns and fears we must face. In today’s world there is an increasing incidence in Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Dementia isn't a specific disease. Instead, it describes a group of symptoms affecting intellectual and social abilities severely enough to interfere with daily functioning. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia — the loss of intellectual and social abilities severe enough to interfere with daily functioning. Although the thought or fear of dementia may not cross your mind on a daily basis, I would like to make you aware of the diseases, signs and symptoms, suspected causes and preventions, medicines, how to care for someone with Alzheimer’s Disease or Dementia, and the roles our communities can help play in the health care of the individuals who attain these diseases. An estimated 5.2 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease, and it could steal the minds of one out of eight baby boomers. (Fox, 2008) Alzheimer’s disease may not be high on the list of causes of death, but it is a disease that can disturb life process. In your daily walk you do not constantly think of each day as a day older, but each day you are getting older, and in today’s society there is a growing concern for dementia caused by Alzheimer’s disease. You may ask ‘why should I worry about Alzheimer’s and dementia?’, but in report by Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor for Reuters’ states: ‘The report found there were 411,000 new cases of Alzheimer's in 2000, a number expected to grow to 454,000 new cases a year by 2010. By 2050, 959,000 people will be diagnosed with the disease every year.’(Fox, 2008) These statements from a report can make you sit back and want to know what causes
