To what extent was Germany’s defeat in WW1 due to the Allies’ strengths and successes? Germany’s weakness/ and failures (poor alliance system) Central powers * World War 1 was fought by two alliances, the Central powers and the Allies- initially called the triple entente. * The core of the central powers was the dual alliances between Germany and Austria. The central principal of Bismarkian diplomacy was to maintain an alliance with Russia and Austria. But Wilhelm II upon rising up to the throne saw Chancellor Bismarck not up for the job of guiding Germany into the future. He dismissed Bismarck and allowed the treaty with Russia to lapse. * After the war began Ottoman and Bulgaria joined the central powers but both were weak and not strong compared to Entente Allies. * Italy was in the alliance system with Germany and Austria before the war, before the war began, called the Triple Alliance. But Italy did not follow them into war; in fact they eventually joined the Allies. * Germany’s allies proved themselves to be rather weak and required German support at various fronts. * Germany ended up having to give a lot more than they received from their allies. For example: they had to provide money and soldiers. * Germany and its allies ended up fighting on its own and uncoordinated. The Allies * Triple entente consisted of Britain, France and Russia. * Italy entered the war with the Entente in 1915. * Minor members of the Entente are Japan, Belgium, Serbia, Montenegro, Greece, Romania and the Czechoslovak legions. * USA entered the war behind the Germans. * The Allies had more allies and most of them were stronger than the central powers. * The Entente Allies were much organized militarily in the way that Britain and France combined their troops in war.
