Germany experienced a period of political calm, economic development and social progress in the mid-20s. Between the period 1924 and 1929 Germany appeared to return to normality after the turbulence of the immediate post-war years, earning it the title of ‘The Golden Years’. Historian William Shirer described it as a time where ‘life seemed more free, more modern and more exciting’. Indeed, it seemed as if Germany had achieved political calm, economic development and social progress. However, as the Weimar Republic collapsed as the Great Depression fell, this so-called stability has been questioned. It is arguable that much of the stability, were built on ‘unstable foundations’. On the surface it looked as if Germany had finally achieved political calm. This was evident in Stresemann’s efforts as foreign minister to better relationships with allies through his policy of ‘Fulfilment’. Stresemann negotiated the Locarno Treaty in 1925 to settle border disputes created by the Treaty of Versailles and in 1926 Germany were invited to join the League of Nations. This was a significant improvement in Germany’s political standing which led people to believe that Germany was no longer the ‘ogre’ of Europe and gave them a renewed faith in the Republic. There was also a decline in support for parties on the extreme left and right. In December 1924 the Nazis only had 3% of votes in the election, whereas the Social Democrats held the majority of 153 seats. In 1928 the Nazis still only had 26% of votes which suggests that that most parties supported the system particularly as people don’t vote for extreme parties if they are satisfied by their current government. Moreover, there were no attempts to overthrow the Weimar government (unlike the 1920 Kapp Putsch and 1923 Munich Putsch).
