The patient that I interviewed is an 85-year-old female. When asked about her health status, she compared her health to that of her friends who fit into the patient’s cohort. Many elderly patients define their health status by their physical mobility. With age, the body does take longer to repair itself; however, the benefits of moderate exercise outweigh the risks when it comes to an elderly person’s health status. Patients with osteoporosis may believe that exercise will result in a fracture, or in this patient’s case, a broken hip. In actuality, using your muscles will help protect your bones. Exercise can also help improve your balance. The patient that I interviewed described arthritis in her hands as a minor health concern. Arthritis is a disease that affects the joints, muscles, and bones. While this particular patient’s arthritis does not appear to be severe, other people can suffer from debilitating pain that can significantly decrease mobility . Many of the changes we face as we grow older, such as retirement, the death of friends and loved ones, increased isolation, or medical problems can lead to depression. The patient that I interviewed did express occasions of sadness and loneliness since her husband passed away; however, depression did not seem to be an immediate concern for this particular patient because she has many close friends and relatives that prevent the patient from isolating herself. Adequate sleep is also very important to prevent depression. The patient stated that normally she gets adequate rest, other than when she is dealing with a urinary tract infection. During these times, the patient has frequency and wakes during the night to use the restroom. This also puts the patient at an increased risk for falls. It is important that the patient keep a clear path to the restroom and leave a bathroom light or night light on to help
