“Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun” (Psalm 37:3-6 NIV). Like these verses from the Bible, the poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins are mainly into religion and how he believes in God as the creator of everything. The use of formalism will be applied throughout this paper which will be manifested in the author, themes, motifs, symbolisms, imageries and structure of the poems. Gerard Manley Hopkins is an English poet and known as one of the greatest nineteenth century’s Victorian poets. He was a Jesuit priest which influence his works because his poems are into religion and nature. Hopkins believes that God is omnipotent and God of the world; therefore, people should acknowledge, know and praise Him. Hopkins likes to right in his poems the object or a person’s uniqueness which he called inscape. He thought that writing individual uniqueness will establish closer relationship to God. The theme of Hopkins poems revolves in the manifestation of God in nature wherein he used poetry for his religious devotion. He also showed us that there is this deep connection between God and nature so as with us, human beings. In this manifestation of God in nature helps us to realize that every little thing is unique and beautiful. These appreciations of things help us to be closer to Him. We can see in Hopkins poems like “Hurrahing in Harvest” where the speaker begins with praise in nature which is also evident in the his poem, “The Starlight Night” wherein the speaker of the poem encourages the readers to observe the marvels of the night sky and then later on compared it to a structure that lead the
