He served as a role model for countless soldiers during America’s Revolutionary War and helped establish future presidents. He was a believer in a strong presidency and a stable government. George Washington inherited a nation that was fearful of power. He acted very carefully and was very much aware that the young nation was in desperate need of a strong central Government. He appointed Thomas Jefferson as Secretary of State, General Henry Knox as Secretary of War and General Edmund Randolph as Attorney General.
The first president I would like to address is also the first president of the United States, George Washington. President Washington was a senior officer during the French and Indian War. Another rank he held was as the commander-in-chief of the Colonial army during the Revolutionary War. He was chosen for this position by the Second Continental Congress. Under his command soldiers captured the cities of Saratoga in 1777 and Yorktown in 1781.
* Adams defended the British soldiers during the Boston Massacre trial. * He served in the Continental Congress. * He nominated George Washington to be a commander in chief of the Army. * He also was the one who chose Thomas Jefferson to write the Declaration of
He also wrote and distributed pamphlets responding to those who were against the First Continental Congress. He joined the Revolutionary Army as a volunteer. When the war came to New York and Princeton he was Commander of the artillery troops all before he was twenty. At the battle of Princeton, Hamilton fired upon Nassau Hall when the British refused to surrender, earning himself an introduction to George Washington. Hamilton showed his Intelligence and General George Washington took him in as his aide-de-camp.
Because of his courageous prerogative, Pickett had a huge impact on three crucial battles: The Battle of Chapultepec, Pickett’s Charge, and the Battle of Five Forks. The Battle of Chapultepec was part of the Mexican-American War and was a two day battle from September 12 to September 13 in 1847. In this battle, he was in the 8th U.S. Infantry, where Major General Winfield Scott was the leading man. This was the battle that catapulted Pickett to fame, and where he obtained an appointment promotion to captain. He gained this by being the first American combatant to make it to the top of the castle walls and by recovering his unit’s colors for the injured James Longstreet.
General Washington could be classified with multiple leadership styles including leadership by example, a transformational leader or even a servant leader. He is considered by many to be one of the most influential leaders of all time and certainly was one of our greatest presidents. Looking first at his leadership style of leading by example, he knew that he had to set the way for the people of the United States to follow for years after his presidency and establish a norm for how the country should be governed. He has high expectations of the young country, and it was said that he “…carried a vision into his presidency and sought to ensure a well-ordered government based on both laws and reason. He believed that through using reason and being open to various viewpoints, citizens could arrive at proper laws and policies to ensure peace, prosperity, and happiness for the country (McNeilly, 168).” Washington was intelligent enough to know the importance of a strong leader in the early years of this new country.
He participated in the Continental Congress between 1783 and 1785 and was invited to the Annapolis Convention, but he did not attend. He also spent most of the 1780’s in the Delaware legislature. Bedford was among the 55 delegates invited to the Constitutional Convention on 1787 and was one of the most vocal speakers in the convention. ------------------------------------------------- Notes: Articles of Confederation: Gunning Bedford Junior joined those who wanted to amend the articles of confederation, but when he liked the idea of a new constitution when it was brought up. Congress: He supported the idea a new constitution (one that followed the New Jersey Plan) to be signed into law.
