Nefi Navarro Biology Lab Final Summary In the Article " Generating Extracellular amyloid aggregates Using E. coli Cells", the purpose for this article that the scientist where working for was to show the importance of the pathological persistent Escherichia coli and how these cells serve a purpose and if they are good or bad when introduced to a certain object or living specimen. First, we need to know more about what an E. coli is and it's origin as well as who discovered it in the first place by providing a background information on the subject. E. coli was first discovered by Theodore von Escherichia who was a German bacteriologist who discovered it in 1885. E. coli is most dangerous when products such as meat, milk, cider, water, sawdust, and even air come in contact with cow feces containing this E. coli bacteria; meat is the primary source of infection that can occur in humans. The bacterium, commonly known as E. coli, can be found in the human intestinal tract and comes in multiple forms, only one of which is deadly. E. coli is only two microns in length and one micron wide. It is rod-shaped and covered with small pili for mobility. E. coli is commonly found in the intestines of humans and other animals, where it usually causes no harm. Some strains can cause severe food poisoning, especially in old people and children. E. coli is a Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic, rod-shaped bacterium that is commonly found in the lower intestine of warm-blooded organisms". E. coli is not only found in the intestines it is used in public health as an indicator of fecal pollution. In medicine and genetics, E. coli may live as harmless inhabitants in the human lower intestine or may produce a toxin causing intestinal illness acid-resistant of feces.
