Part 1: Academic Writing (50%): The world has become a better place to live and has created a more democratic society. However, violence is an unavoidable issue and occurs in almost every corner of the earth. Gender related violence and sexual abuse are the most demoralizing issue nowadays. Looking at the current issues, I agree with the stimulus given that is in spite of the important development of the last century toward a more democratic society, women today are exposed to a gender-related violence and sexual abuse to a much higher degree than men. Gender violence does happen in both sexes but the cases on violence against women outnumbered male cases. In a review of studies of sexual abuse by Peters attests that the number of females sexually being abused ranged from 6% to 62% but the number of males sexually being abused varied from only 3% to 31% (Soroka & Bryjak, 1995, p.307). This evidently shows that women are exposed to gender violence and sexual abuse two times higher than men. Why does sexual abuse and violence against women happen? Who is to be blamed? The significant reason why this happens is because of gender inequality which subsequently leads to discrimination in gender role, sexual harassment and domestic violence involving women. Gender is the social and physical traits associated with masculinity and femininity (Popenoe, 2000, p.296).
