The advertisement for this drinking chocolate depicts how your day can be brightened by indulging in this delicious chocolate, and how for that moment of time, everything is all right, despite what was actually going on at the time. In the 1930s, Hershey’s advertised their drinking chocolate through trade cards that depicted happiness, as well as a demonstration of the socially and culturally accepted norms of the time. The 1930s were the time this visual came out, and during this time was the time of the Great Depression. After the crash of the stock market in 1929, the economy at the time went down the drain. The gender roles, as well as how minorities fit into society affected how images and advertisements were portrayed. At the time, since so many people lost their jobs, many men were out of work. “Men's lives were more disrupted by the Depression than women's. As men tried desperately to remain breadwinners for their families, their self-esteem suffered when they lost their jobs” ("Encyclopedia.com").
