I tended to learn more effectively by taking notes in class and rewriting them later. Later in my years of high school I highlight passages in my readings and write them down on paper. I read over the notes repetitiously in order to grasp the information. In addition to being hands on learner, I am a bottom-up learner. I am a very detail-oriented individual who prefers to have a rock solid foundation built before I proceed to new challenges.
One must dedicate more time to his or her studies in order to succeed. Most teachers and professors in high school and college are well-educated individuals. They have spent years studying to obtain a teaching degree. As teachers and professors, their main concern is for the student to learn, understand, and master what they teach. The teacher or professor may accomplish this by reviewing the material, emphasizing key points, and providing the students with examples that they would easily relate to.
During the class on reading and the brain we discussed what reading was and the five areas of reading. The brain is not naturally able to read; we must train and practice it to be able to derived meaning from text. Based on this statement alone I can now see how reading and literacy are similar. During the class on comprehension and reading and writing the notes and videos really helped me tie both literacy and reading together. When we watch the videos the teachers were thinking out loud and discussing the little voice in her head that tells her things while she is reading, like “oh I have no idea what I just read” or “hum I wonder who this person is?” or “wow that’s neat!”.

For example, learning to decode followed by fluency is the first step followed by independent reading, reading with absorption, and ending with critical reading. ("Stages of reading," 2010) According to Chall, each student will progress through the stages in their own time and that development in learning to read can be affected by interactions with their environment. (Chall, 1983) I can support my students' development by understanding what to look for at each stage. I can also assist in their growth and development by knowing what works for them instructionally. The later may require some detective work but I welcome the challenge.
Students should be able to, 1) determine the purpose of the reading and 2) formulate a plan and chose a reading technique. II. Determine the purpose of the reading A. If you are reading for pleasure and will not be tested or need to retain the information you read you can: 1) Skim through the material 2) Focus on basic ideas 3) Ignore minor and some major details B. If you are reading for a class assignment retention is a necessity.
It will be assumed that you have read the text and have some introductory knowledge of the work to be covered each lesson; failure to do so may affect your progress in class. Your teacher will then teach you the concepts and show you how to do the examples in the workbook thus ensuring you have exemplars when completing additional questions from the workbook and texts. Your teacher also has all the worked answers to the additional questions in this workbook and you must check your answers when you
Students must ask themselves, “What did my instructor say about this chapter or subject when it was assigned?” and “What do I already know about this subject?” Reading in order to find the answer gives students a purpose for reading. Read. As students begin to read, they must look for answers to the questions they asked in the prior step. Students will reread captions under pictures and graphs, note all underlined and bold printed words or phrases, and pay special attention to underlined, italicized, bold printed words or phrases. For more difficult passages, reading speed should be reduced.
It’s whatever works best for the individuals. Every student should be taught on how to write notes. When our exams are near, the notes take a great place in helping us preparing for our exams. This saves up a lot of time then reading straight from the books. Notes also make you get organized and things start to make more sense than before.
The best way to overcome this laziness is to motivate them selves. Reminding themselves of all the good that will come out of them completing college. I would never want to go to class, but I always reminded myself of how much easier my future is going to be once I get a degree. Self-discipline is not only to motivate them, but to also learn how to adapt to a new environment. When in college, students have a wide selection of people in their classes.
