WHY GELATO IS HEALTHIER THAN ICE CREAM I’m sure many of you think gelato is the same as ice cream. Well, it’s actually not. Gelato, which literally means “frozen” is the Italian word for ice cream. The Italian specialty has been around since the late 16th century and was created by Bernardo Buontalenti. Gelato is made with some of the same ingredients as most other frozen dairy desserts. Milk, various sugars, flavouring including fruit and nut purees are the main ingredients. What makes gelato different than the typical ice cream is that it is much more healthier than ice cream. Gelato is traditionally made with milk, while ice cream is made with cream. Gelato is creamy because of the process that is used, not because of the amount of fat in it. Moreover, the flavour of gelato is also more intense because there is less fat content. Apparently, the fat content in ice cream dulls the flavour a bit. Other than that, gelato is most often made fresh daily in small batches unlike ice cream which are usually made in large batches and are kept frozen for a long time . In fact, most flavourings of the gelato are made with real and fresh ingredients such as nuts, chocolate, fruits, berries, liqueurs – all of which aren’t overwhelmed by cream. That’s why it is customary for a good-quality gelato to have a truer flavour and less fat in it. In conclusion, it is better to eat gelato than ice cream. So, if you suddenly have a sudden craving for ice cream or something sugary and creamy, I suggest you indulge in some deliciously made Italian gelato. Gelato is also getting popular in Malaysia, so you can easily find a gelato shop in Malaysia.
