“Common Sense” was the pamphlet written by Thomas Paine which was published in 1776 in which he talks about why there is need for American independence and argues for self-governed nation. Paine uses the basic format of proposal and even after so many years, this piece of writing remains of the best written articles in the history of United States. Paine used the common language of the people which helped him prove his point more effectively. Paine begins his argument with the basic and theoretical reflections about the British Government and then explains more about the specifics of colonial situation. He then gives various evidences which were easily interpretive and understandable by the common American.
Theodore Roosevelt was one of the politicians who came across Croly’s book and was rather impressed by his theories. During the summer of 1910, Roosevelt “publicly took over the New Nationalism, phrase, key doctrine, and difficulties”(207). On August 31, Theodore Roosevelt gave a speech in Osawatomie, Kansas. During the climax of the speech, Roosevelt veered off in a new direction and stated Croly’s exact phrase on “New Nationalism”. Although the speech did not take all the specific points from Croly’s book, Roosevelt did restate a large amount of “The Promise of American Life”.
In fact, this is my semester studying in the America United State, and 1776 is the first English historical book that I have read in my life. I can tell it is a huge experience, and I feel really excited about it, especially the way David writes about historical circumstances in 1776 is liked telling audiences a story. He described the battles between Great Britain and America colonies. It is so real that I thought he was there in the battles witting and even joining it. Moreover, the book includes pictures of historical figures as King George, George Washington, or Henry Knox, etc., and three maps of Boston, Long Island, and Trenton that help me to understand how the line of the enemy set up and what directions the another was or was coming from.
