Carl A. Rickerson Professor Evelyn Rogers English 111 22 September 2011 L.A. Lakers vs. L.A. Clippers I am a huge sports fanatic so when I saw for this essay that we could write about sports, my brain began running with ideas. I finally settled on my sport of choice the National Basketball Association, also know as the NBA. I plan to show the comparison and contrast of two of the NBA’s most storied franchises. One is storied due to its enormous success; the other because of its enormous failures. The L.A. Lakers and the L.A. Clippers. Some of the comparisons of these two teams are quite obvious. They both are in Los Angeles, California, which is one of the NBA’s biggest markets. Even though the Lakers have been around almost double the years the Clippers have, they still draw a pretty decent attendance at games. It gives everyone in the city something to do during basketball season. The celebrities tend to be seen all around at Laker games while the Clippers give the average person a family night at a basketball game. These two teams also share the same arena “Staples Center.” They alternate having home games when the other is on the road. Jerry Buss is an owner who believes in putting the best product on the court. The have had superstars such as Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’neal, and Magic Johnson. Jerry Buss has had no issue paying the big bucks to bring big time names and talent to his team. Donald Sterling on the other hand has been known for being more on the cheap side. Not willing to pay the money to put a good product on the court. He has even entertained several offers to sell the team without much success.
