Gambling addiction, also known as compulsive gambling, has become a big issue in today’s society. It can vary from making a simple bet of a dollar with a friend to going to the casinos and putting hundreds to thousands of dollars into the machines to play “games”. While most people are at it for fun, there are people that do it because they think they need to (problem gambling). These people will do anything they can in order to gamble, which can lead to negative consequences for him/herself and the community. As of now, there are only two states that do not allow any type of gambling. This is a tremendous increase even over the past decade. There are ways to help these problem gamblers, and prevent others from having this problem. Addictive gambling has major harmful effects on people, and should be prevented.
A definition of gambling retrieved from dictionary.com is: “the activity or practice of playing at a game of chance for money or other stakes”, or “the act or practice of risking the loss of something important by taking a chance or acting recklessly”. Compulsive gambling basically just means to do this in excess due to obsession. There are multiple different types of gambling, including: scratch tickets, lottery tickets, casino games, stock markets, cards, horse races, etc. Every form of gambling can lead to addiction because it is easy to access and simple to bet on. There are two different types of people that work in gambling. One is the Odd-maker who determines the odds and payouts. The Second is the bookies who are responsible for handling the exchange of money. These workers often encourage people to bet more money. Some people start gambling to temporarily take their minds off of reality, but others do it for fun and are easily persuaded and pressured into taking risks.
Addictive gambling is known as a progressive addiction which has many social, psychological, and physical effects.This compulsive gambling behavior is known as problem gambling....
