My Hero Essay Washington's greatness is not just that he led the Revolution to victory in a hopeless seven-year war against the mightiest military power in the world. It's not just that he presided over the convention that wrote our enduring Constitution which is the fountainhead of our freedom. It's not just that he was uniquely unanimously elected to two terms as our first President. It's not just that he made our young republic a reality when he declined a third term as President and transferred the reins of power to our second President. Washington's greatness was based on his leadership and character, so acknowledged by the many other great men of his time. Washington is the hero we need today because he is an extraordinary example of a President. Washington had the character to decline power and not be corrupted by it. The first child of Augustine Washington and his second wife, Mary Ball Washington, George Washington was born on their Pope's Creek Estate born on February 11, 1731. Washington spent much of his boyhood at Ferry Farm in Stafford County near Fredericksburg. Lawrence Washington inherited another family property from his father, a plantation on the Potomac River which he named Mount Vernon, in honor of his commanding officer, Admiral Edward Vernon. George inherited Ferry Farm upon his father's death and eventually acquired Mount Vernon after Lawrence's death. The death of his father prevented Washington from crossing the Atlantic to receive the rest of his education at England's Appleby School, as his older brothers had done. A couple years later he began his career in the military during the French and Indian war which would lead him to becoming one of the greatest presidents. In August, Washington attended the First Virginia Convention, where he was selected as a delegate to the First Continental Congress. As tensions rose further in 1774,
