Project 1: Fabrication of a G-Clamp Aim : To learn the usage of common engineering tools and machines. Objective : To learn the usage of common engineering tools and machines associated in process planning for the fabrication of a G-Clamp. Apparatus : 1. Filing (round files, flat files) 2. Clamping (table clamps) 3. Grinding equipment 4. Welding equipment 5. Drilling equipment 6. Thread taping (tap and dies) 7. Punching 8. Sand blasting Process Planning : The fabrication of the G-Clamp consists of 4 components. 1. Bracket 2. Rod holder 3. Screw rod 4. Rod tip Fabrication of Bracket : Drawing shape 1. Trace the outline shape of the G-Clamp onto the metal preparation. 2. Trace closely to the original part so that the tracing is not bigger than the original. Dimensions 1. Mark the exact dimensions on the preparation. 2. Use some grinding to remove metal where it was excessive. 3. Use filing to remove metal where it was in slight excess. Fabrication of Rod Holder : Through hole 1. A through hole is needed to hold the screw bar. 2. Use a punch to make a small point where a hole was to be drilled. 3. Made a through hole in the holder using an electric table drill. 4. The through hole diameter is 8.2 mm. Thread tapping 1. Thread tapping is a process that produces an internal thread in the G-Clamp base and an external thread in the G-Clamp handle. 2. A 3/8 in tap was made to fit a 9.5 mm diameter threaded rod. 3. Oil the tap and hole is necessary during tapping. 4. Held the tap vertical throughout the tapping process. Welding 1. Welding in an important process in joining the Rod Holder to the Clamp Bracket. 2. Held the Rod Holder to the Screw Rod. Fabrication of Screw Rod Assembly : Rod End 1. The Rod End holds the Screw Rod for the G-Clamp.
