Historical Development of Nursing Timeline Tiffany C. Dovgan NUR/513 October 15, 2012 Dolores Diehl Historical Development of Nursing Timeline The discipline or practice of nursing has developed over time and many nursing theorists contributed to the professional practice as we know it today. Nursing theories provide structure to the critical thinking and decision- making processes. Theory, research and applications to clinical practice are symbiotic as new concepts, practices and empirical data emerge professional practice changes or evolves. Florence Nightingale’s writings originating in 1859 are considered the first nursing theories postulated. She is known for decreasing mortality rates in hospitals during the Crimean War (George, 2011).
In 2008 an official partnership was formed between Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and Institute of Medicine (IOM) to accomplish this goal. One of the main objectives of the partnership was to find out innovative proposals and ideas regarding how the nursing field can be converted and transformed more

Integration of Evidence-Based Practice into Professional Nursing Practice Chamberlain College of Nursing 351: Transitions to Professional Nursing Spring and 2010 Integration of Evidence-Based Practice into Professional Nursing Practice “It is not enough to do your best, you must know what to do, and THEN do your best.” –W. Edwards Deming. Introduction As medical treatment and technology advances, health care is constantly changing, ultimately affecting the treatment and prevention of diseases. Health care has turned to the use of evidence-based practice to provide the care that research has shown to provide the best outcomes (Troseth, 2009). Evidence-based practice (EBP) provides the research and information of how to deliver the best patient care, and can be integrated into the delivery of nursing care.

For effective change, expert planning skills are required, therefore this paper is going to discuss about the strategy of change of the way in which new staff in Operating Room are orientated, based on Lewin’s change theory. This strategy of change is going to articulate around the problem identified from this orientation program, the key personnel involved, proposals for change, strategies for achieving this change, analysis of what actually might occur, and the evaluation tools. After pondering over the organizational function in Operating Room, the writer as one of the registered nurse in Operating Room, had come out with a decision to improve the way new staffs are being orientated, which considered requires change. Based on Lewin’s theory of change as the framework, the writer has developed a change management strategy for the identified problem.
As a young RN, I worked in a critical care setting. I remember accepting many 20 hour shifts and working under horribly huge patient loads. When I worked in the inpatient setting, in the 1970’s and 1980’s, I was never aware of protections like Safe Harbor. I am glad that new GNs must pass an examination regarding nursing jurisprudence. Hopefully this will allow them to make reasonable and responsible decisions regarding their own nursing practice.

From the ill-perceived role of the nurse performing mundane tasks for physicians more than half a century ago, the establishment of advanced practice nursing as a distinct pillar in the health care system to the hybridization of the practice of both nursing and medicine as a nurse practitioner to address primary care physician shortages, it is still to be determined what non-clinical roles may arise in the future health care system. More recently, the operations of the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Board of Directors arose "in response to client care needs and to the health care delivery environment" (Spross, Hamric, Hall, Minarik, Sparacino & Stanley, 2004, p. 2). The CNL, an APN who is a generalist, works at the microsystems level (e.g. outpatient clinics, hospital units) and is concerned with such tasks as developing and implementing strategies for plans of care at the preventive level, coordination of care and other administrative-related
