Fundamentals of Effective Communication in the Workplace

Since I have been sixteen years old, I have worked in a restaurant. Every day, I face obstacles with communication. Have you ever heard the phrase, “communication is key.”? Well, I agree with that one hundred percent. In the workplace we have to have effective communication because we have so many employees working and different things going on at once. Sometimes, things don’t get communicated very well. As for myself, I see the difference between when communication occurs and when it doesn’t. Most of the time when communication takes place, things run a lot smoother and people don’t get confused. There was this one time that I can remember when communication played a good part in our business. It was Friday, around 10:15 AM and we were trying to change our kitchen over so we could cook lunch products. In our restaurant, we wear headsets for communication with our drive thru. During transition time, its difficult to get behind. You have some customers wanting breakfast, while others want lunch. Of course you want to make your customers happy, so we try to leave it an option to what you want around this time. Using the headsets, this gives us the opportunity to communicate with the drive thru order taker to let them know if we have the product the customer would like. On the other hand, if the customer is on counter, we let the shift manager know what we have left for breakfast. There is a lot of communication that goes on in the restaurant between managers. Most of the time we have two managers on the floor at the same time, a shift manager and a production manager. The shift manager is in charge of the whole restaurant while the production manager is just in charge of the kitchen area.
