Obesity has become a major problem in today’s world. With almost one-third of our nation’s population considered overweight, the health issues that arise from this condition continue to multiply. Just as an athlete trains to prevent injuries, so can the overweight population train to reduce health problems, and possibly reverse their obesity. Functional training helps improve physical fitness and mental health while making daily routines easier. For an overweight individual, exercise along with proper nutrition and diet is essential to help lose the excess weight and achieve a healthy body composition. Exercise is generally more difficult for an overweight individual, plus the added self-consciousness, making it a less attractive activity. Functional training provides the exercises that will help make everyday activities easier. Implementing even a moderate aerobics routine or simple weight conditioning along with healthier eating habits into daily life can increase mobility and energy levels. I believe that exercise is easier to accomplish when it is not focused on as a sole activity. Playing a sport or participating in an activity is generally more fun than jogging or lifting weights. I would develop a program that starts out gradually with simple exercises and activities, and builds in complexity and intensity over time. I believe the program should be masked as a social activity that promotes participation and is fun. It shouldn’t focus on the act of exercising, yet it would incorporate functional exercise. In other words, it should be a program that the participants look forward to attending, and don’t perceive as a required exercise and fitness program. I would get the group together and first acknowledge why everyone is there, and then explain the objectives of the program. The program would consist of games and challenges that would
