Purpose: This activity is designed to give you practice with planning and organizing a Free Response question. On the AP Exam, you have to plan your essay in 5 minutes. Try to time yourself---and see how much you can accomplish in 5 minutes. Today, you have 15 minutes to complete this activity without using ANY BOOKS OR NOTES. After 15 minutes, you can use YOUR BOOK, NOTES, AND STUDY GUIDES FOR 30 MINUTES. These notes must be YOURS NOT A CLASSMATES. Total writing time 45 minutes!
STEP 1: Read the question and write the question. Underline the verbs, circle the conjunctions, put asterisk beside the time period.
STEP 2: List twenty of the most important pieces of specific factual information (think about terms you identified on study guides, treaties, names, etc.) applicable to this question.

STEP 3: List the specific information (from the above list) which have similar characteristics under separate categories and provide a category heading. These categories are the topics of your 2 OR 3 body paragraphs. DO NOT JUST WRITE THE NUMBER WRITE THE WORDS AGAIN. These specific facts would be in the paragraph to support your argument. Make sure that your evidence/specific facts are balanced between each category. In other words, you should not have 2 specific facts for one category and 15 for the other.

STEP 5: Generate a main idea, or topic sentence, for each category, which clearly and concisely shows the trend, movement, or similarity that all bits of factual information have in common. Rank the paragraphs 1, 2, or 3 according to which one you would talk about first, second, third.
