For a celebrity that began her life of fame as an out-of-control actress to a heroic icon, she has dedicated much of her life promoting awareness for refugees and displaced children around the world. She prides herself in her work off camera, as she is dedicated to her charity work. Angelina Jolie is not just a celebrity; she is a working mother, successful businesswoman, and philanthropist. Being the daughter of Academy Award winner Jon Vought, Jolie was no stranger to the film industry. She trained at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, where she performed in several productions. She worked as a professional model while studying writing and filmmaking at New York University. During the mid-90s, Jolie appeared in many small films that gained her attention from audiences worldwide. She won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1999 and was also awarded ‘World’s Most Beautiful Woman’ by People Magazine. In 2000, Jolie first became aware of worldwide humanitarian crises while filming Tomb Raider in Cambodia. Witnessing the beautiful culture and poverty of the country was an eye opening experience. According to UN.org, “Seeing firsthand the enormous challenges that refugees face was a life-altering experience for Angelina, who decided to use her fame to aid their cause.” For Jolie, this was where the chapter of her humanitarian work began. She contacted the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to learn more about troubled areas. Jolie began visiting refugee camps around the world, making Sierra Leone and Tanzania her first stop. According to the UNHCR, “Jolie insists on covering all costs related to her missions and shares the same rudimentary working and living conditions as UNHCR field staff.” In 2001, she was named a UNHCR, Goodwill Ambassador.
