What is Friendship? Friendship doesn’t last forever, and sometimes it’s meant to be broken. In the novel of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, there seems to be a very strong friendship between the two main characters George Milton and Lennie Small. In the novel, both George and Lennie’s friendship seems to be good because they travel together, and seem to get along fine even though Lennie always causes trouble. Even though we might think their friendship is perfect, it’s not because there is also a downfall to it. At the beginning of the novel, the friendship between George and Lennie isnt that great because they have barely escaped some trouble, and had to run away because of Lennie. “An you ain’t gonna do no bad things like you done in weed, neither” (7). George is reminding Lennie of what he did back in weed, which caused them to run away. “I could get along so easy and so nice if I didn’t have you on my trail. I could live so easy and maybe have a girl” (7). George thinks that he will be better off living without Lennie, and thinks that it’s Lennie’s fault for having to runaway. After hearing George keep telling him all these things Lennie finally asks him if he want s him to go away. “If you don’t want me I can go off in the hills and find a cave. I can go away any time” (12). Things between George and Lennie start off a bit shaky, but along the novel their friendship gets better. The following day Lennie and George have to go to a new town and look for a new job. “No, he aint, but he’s sure a hell of a good worker. Strong as a bull.” (12). Because they have been together so long George knows what Lennie is capable of. George knows that Lennie is stronger than anyone and is trying to make sure that their new boss knows that so that he hires them.
