It also states that the community college can be for people that have jobs, but who want to study for a career. I agree with Rose in the point that students in community college should have more acknowledgements to have better resources for their career field. There are some students who have struggled with high school education, but have decided to do something to study for a career. Subsequent research will then recommend several key mechanisms that educators of FYE students should put in place to combat attrition levels. The FYE is defined as ‘ … a time for transition, growth, and development of the knowledge, skills and attitudes essential for academic success, intellectual growth, living independently and developing interpersonal relationships, and emotional well being’ (California State University, 2004, p.2). It is widely accepted that there are many causes of attrition rates in FYE (McInnis 2000; Swing, 2003; Kift, 2004; Krause, 2006; Kuh, 2007; ACER, 2008). There are many factors that must be taken into consideration if universities are to stem attrition rates in FYE. This literature review will focus on the following primary causes of attrition among students in the FYE.

Career and vocational paths should as well be encouraged to allow the students to experiment and expand their knowledge on what they may already know. Most colleges focus on what is not clear to the naked eye. They try and most of the time succeed on embracing knowledge to most of their students on materials they most likely will not need in their career, for example I am currently learning in my biology class how to differentiate a plant cell from an animal cell. In the career path I would like pursue, this information will not be applied. College is not for everyone because there are alternative ways to succeed in life without an education.
