He was in 6th grade at Tanglen Elementary, but years behind the other boys in his class who had played since the time they could walk. His dad tried his best to convince him to follow in his footsteps and one day play for the same city that he once had, but he never had any luck. There were many long winters on the small secluded pond behind his house of persistent skating drills, bone bruising falls, and aching feet from the twenty five dollar CCM skates purchased at Play it Again sports. However on the evening when he and his best friend Mikey were watching television in Charlie’s basement, he surprisingly had no doubts when his mom asked him if he wanted to give it a shot. “It would be good for you Charlie, you can meet some new friends and we can go shopping for new equipment.” That was that was needed for him to agree. It was 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday October On the car ride home, Charlie wasn’t very talkative. He had the tendency to be a little edgy on most Wednesdays in the fall and winter seasons as he dreaded his two hour religion class at Church. It was his fourth year in religion, and he had already given up on trying to listen and pay attention. He was also the only kid from a Hopkins school in the class, so he didn’t participate or talk with the other kids unless the parent teacher Susan called on him. He could only think about the twins game as he looked out the window of his dad’s Ford Explorer. His mom reminded him as he was running out the door to catch the bus for school earlier that morning that his first team hockey practice was tonight after religion, but Charlie was more concerned with missing the bus to ponder what she said.
