Free Speech in Universities The world isn’t clear-cut and simple to read. There are many grey areas. The truth varies from person to person depending on who you ask. The same goes for right and wrong. What one person judges are right, someone else might say is wrong. This is what makes the human race unique. Our world is a dynamic place full of different people with different thoughts and personalities; it is what enables us to grow and learn and change as people. However, because of this blur in what people perceive as right or wrong, or in what someone thinks is one thing and another person thinks is another, there comes conflict. This is where the issue of free speech comes into play. Why should colleges have the authority to judge what someone says? Can anyone really define where someone’s right of free speech begins and ends? If anyone can, where is that point? And is that point the same for everyone? There are too many discrepancies to ever be truly certain. Censorship of student speech is incompatible with higher education because most colleges and universities want students who will think for themselves and excel in everything they do, and the only kind of people that do that are those that are allowed to push the limits and cross the line. Intelligent people never settle because their minds are always working. Intelligent people are always making new discoveries and affecting this world because they never settle for being mediocre. They stand out. Massachusetts Institute of Technology, one of the best universities in the country believes, “when people take risks in life, they learn resilience as a result - because risk leads to failure as often as it leads to success.” If you cannot take the risk to challenge someone else’s view or opinion and form your own, then you will never succeed.
