The ethical view of abortion Does a mother have the right to take the life of her unborn child? Some may say that it is God’s will for that fetus to be born, and that the child is supposed to be born. This essay does not argue religious views, but ethical views. I will be using different views from an ethical standpoint to try to understand if abortion is morally good or bad. From a non-biblical standpoint, it is based on whether a woman finds it ethically right to terminate a pregnancy and what effect it would ultimately have on her happiness.
To say that someone is "pro-life" is to say that the person believes that the government has a right to preserve all human life, regardless of intent or quality-of-life. The "pro-choice" view is that a baby does not have human rights within the mother's womb. Pro-life believes- that even incapable growing babies and undeveloped human life is sacred and must be protected by the government. Abortion they therefore believe must not be legal, nor should it be widely done on an illegal basis. Pro-choice believes- that abortion is the belief that women have the right to choose to abort a baby from their body.
From a religious standpoint they believe that when the fetus arrives it is a person. Most believe when the nervous system is made, because it can feel pain like an abortion. However this stage does not happen until the 6th or 7th month and abortion never occurs after the 24th week. Abortion is necessary because of the potential of existing circumstances that would be a detriment to the mother or fetus. The mother could be physically, mentally, or emotionally unwell and not capable of being pregnant or having a child without endangering her health; the pregnancy could have possibly been the result of a terrible crime, such as rape or incest; the fetus could be unhealthy and be a danger to the mother's health.
Raising a child alone isn't as taboo as it was back then. But, she could choose for herself whether she wanted to have an abortion, or if she decided to keep the baby she would have many resources available to her. But this isn’t the case in this story. Moreover children should not come into the world unwanted as this only increases the already high number of orphans. In some cases some parents/peoples simply cannot afford to raise children and this leads to babies being born into poverty. On the other hand people that are anti-legal abortion strongly believe that personhood begins from the moment of conception and claim fetuses have a fundamental right to life which should be protected. Additionally women should use contraceptives and not abortion to prevent unwanted pregnancies as it doesn’t allow the woman to even reach that stage of having to consider abortion. Correspondingly selective abortion based on genetic abnormalities is overt discrimination.
They provide evidence for the idea that life starts at conception with biblical quotes like "the days ordained to me were written in your book before one even came to be" and "your eyes saw my unformed body" suggesting that our personhood in God's view starts at as soon as the egg is fertilised. With that in mind, one of the ten commandments: "thou shalt not kill" would apply strongly to foetuses, and this is why many Catholics believe abortion is wrong under all circumstances. As for the societal implication, Christians could argue that allowing abortion could lead to a lesser respect for human life in general, which is disrespectful to God who gave us the divine gift of life. From the perspective of Joseph Fletcher's situation ethics, abortion can be seen as unacceptable in many cases where the amount of agape love is not maximised. This could mean in cases where the mother could look after the child comfortably with love and care but chooses not to out of selfishness instead (one of the four functioning principles: pragmatism, would need to be applied to decide).
We all want to reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies, but there is no reason to single out abortion among all a woman’s reproductive choices as the one choice which is somehow less valid or acceptable than childbirth, adoption, or other reproductive choices. Abortion is a valid personal decision within the field of health care. Every woman has their own personal reason to have an abortion. There are many reasons women decide abortion is the best choice for them such as, birth control failures, inability to care and support
The movement of anti-abortion was created and was also expanding. Creating two sides: pro-life which are against abortion, stating that abortion is murder. They believe that the fetus is a person, and has rights like all humans, and shouldn’t be killed. And the other side is pro-choice, entailing that those against abortion are against choice. They don’t see the fetus as an individual, they think that it’s mother’s decision to stay pregnant or not.
But I do not think it is right for the government to make abortion illegal either. Individual liberty is one of the founding principles of the United States and the decision to have an abortion is a very personal one. While I think it is a serious choice to have an abortion, I think there are some situations where it can be justified. A woman should not be forced to have a child that is the result of rape or incest. Even if these cases are only about one percent of abortions, it still affects thousands of women each year.
It cannot be held responsible for the deeds of another and should not be punished for those implied deeds. In the prolife view, women who choose, in the face of problematic circumstances, to keep an unwanted pregnancy when abortion is a choice, are "truly" female. He or she could have discovered the cure for cancer or aids, but it would never known, because they never existed. Many Prolifers also believe that abortion goes against the declaration of independence.
