Abortion: Pro-Life In January 1973, the Supreme Court case Roe vs. Wade, made it legal for any woman in the first trimester of pregnancy to get an abortion. It stated that in the second trimester the state could regulate the abortion in ways that it pertained to the safety of the mother, and in the third trimester the state can forbid the abortion if the mother’s life is at risk (Murchison). However, just because the Supreme Court feels that abortion is acceptable, does not mean the United States as a whole feels that way. Since this case, abortion has been an extremely controversial topic that brings up passion and emotions no matter which side you are on with the topic. When doctors begin to practice medicine, they typically swear an oath called the Hippocratic Oath, which basically says they will practice medicine ethically. Doctors are breaking their Hippocratic Oaths when they perform abortions. The older version of the oath directly states that they will not perform abortions and the newer version says that they will not try to “play God”, which implies that doctors should not take anyone’s life in any way intentionally (“Pros and Cons of Controversial Issues”).When doctors break their oath, they are breaking a binding contract which is illegal to do. Since they took that oath saying that they will never intentionally kill another human being, abortion should be illegal because a baby is a human life at the moment of conception. Also, the Declaration of Independence states that everyone has the right to life, love, and the pursuit of happiness. Killing an innocent child before it even has a chance at life is taking all of those rights away from him. Just because the baby cannot speak for himself yet, doesn’t mean he should not have these constitutional rights and freedoms. It is the law of this country that every American citizen has that freedom and those rights. Yes, everyone in the United States does have that freedom to choose, but killing their child should not even be an option when it means taking away that child’s right to life.
