True wisdom appears when an individual is able to transfer thinking and learning from one situation to another situation. A wise person is able to analyze situations and topics and apply learning and thinking from similar elements of other situations and topics to solve problems. This connects to the idea of the figurative in several ways. For example, the phrase "I'm hungry enough to eat a horse." This isn't meant literally, but we understand that this person means she is very hungry.
“look back… on the variety of dangers to which you were exposed; reflect on that time in which every human aid appeared unavailable, and in which even hope and fortitude wore the aspect of inability to the conflict and you cannot but be led to a serious and grateful sense of your miraculous and providential preservation.” Banneker is making a connection between slavery and the oppression that America has been through in order to have Jefferson relate to how slaves feel about being “under groaning captivity and cruel oppression.” In addition to Pathos, Banneker used formal diction to exhibit the vastness of being free as well as the horrors of slavery. He utilized phrases such as “...tranquility which you enjoy…” and “...apprehension of the horrors…” in order to have his audience, in this case Thomas Jefferson, relate to what he’s feeling. Banneker also alludes to the Revolutionary War when he says, “... recall to your mind that time in which the arms and tyranny of the British Crown were exerted with every powerful effort in order to reduce you to a State of Servitude...”. His strong diction evokes emotion into Thomas Jefferson as Banneker makes the point that Britain's tyrannical rule on America is similar to African Americans being forced into “a
Stand Up! As we look throughout history, one could argue, that we couldn’t find a more appalling and unjust act as that of slavery. Slavery played a major part of not only history but of an innumerable amount of American people. In David Walker’s “Appeal in Four Articles” and Frederick Douglass’s “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July”, two men of African American descent struggle with the reality of slavery and the cruel results and effect it had on people like themselves. Walker was a free black man living in Boston who had a unique view of slavery.

There were horses and men, cattle and women, pigs and children, all holding the same rank in the scale of being, and were all subjected to the same narrow examination. At this moment, I saw more clearly than ever the brutalizing effects of slavery upon both slave and slaveholder. (56) The second important theme that helps Douglass achieve his purpose is the theme of two-facedness of some Christians. Douglass emphases the corruption slaveholding had over religion. During the narrative, Douglass forms a difference between true Christianity and false Christianity, which he explains as one, being the “Christianity of Christ” and the other as the “Christianity of this land”.
He is given to Lucretia Auld where he is then again sent back to Baltimore. Upon the death of Lucretia, Frederick is taken by Thomas Auld and is sent back. It is at this point in his life when Frederick begins entertaining the idea of escape. Once again, back to his original setting, Frederick is faced with the extreme hardships of slavery. Here, under Thomas Auld, he is fed little and experiences a different type of slaveholder.
Perspectives on slavery I think everyone can agree that slavery is wrong. As Americans we can only look back with regret, at the acts that took place. Slaves were treated poorly they were beaten and were not well fed. Kids 12 and younger were slaves, families were separated, and slaves would even get beaten brutally and without mercy. As with every crime you need evidence, and to prove to those who are naïve and do not believe in what happened it is necessary.
