Fracking in Ohio Fracking (Hydraulic Fracturing) is the process in which energy companies extract natural gas from shale. At one time, reaching the shale was impossible until recent advances in drilling technology made it possible to reach the shale. Horizontal and vertical drilling allows the energy companies to inject pressurized fracking fluids into the shale deep below the earth’s surface. This creates channels to extract the natural gas at higher rates than before. The shale is hydraulically fractured with water and other fluids. Article 1 - Ohio Earthquake Likely Caused by Fracking Wastewater - By Mark Fischetti Scientist believe the earthquakes in Mahoning County between March 17, 2011 and January 13, 2012, are likely caused by fracking. The fracturing of shale with water and chemicals and extracting the natural gas was not the cause of the earthquakes but the disposal of the waste water being pumped back into the sandstone. Article 2 - Ohio Earthquakes: Officials Say Tremors Were 'Almost Certainly' Caused By Wastewater Injection New regulations have been placed on energy companies. Well operators must conduct a more comprehensive geological report when they are requesting to drill in a certain area. The chemicals they use to drill must also be a factor in the drilling process and are to be tracked. The disposal of the waste water (which includes radioactive materials) is said to be safest to be pumped back into the sandstone in the earth. However, when the waste water is pumped back into the earth that is when the earthquakes occur.
