Fracking Environmental Health

For this week’s newspaper article, you decided to write about environmental health. You chose this topic because there is a lot of talk around town about “fracking”. Some people are in favor of allowing natural gas companies to frack in your area because it will help the local economy. Others fear its potential effects on community health and safety. The American Petroleum Institute held a town meeting to assure residents that their process is safe. You want to learn more about this issue so you can enlighten your community. Write a 2 – 3 page paper that addresses the following: 1. Inform your readers about fracking – what is it? 2. What are some of the concerns about its effect on health, safety, and the environment? 3. After analyzing…show more content…
Then, a well is vertically drilled from the surface into the ground, and then horizontally to the point that access to the target rock containing the gas is possible. A steel pipe is then inserted into the well. The pipe must have pores on some part that will access the deeper level containing natural gas to allow the fracking fluid to flow out of the pipe to react within the target zones, (Schmidt, 2011). The pores form the route through which the gas will flow into the well and up to the surface as well as the flow of the fracking fluid back to the surface. The volume of the fracking fluid ejected through the pores exceeds the volume of the same that penetrates to the target zones. As a result, there is accumulation of the fluid and this raises the pressure to a point that forces the rocks in the target zones to crack. The flow of the fluid into the well then stops, and the fluid begins to flow into the opposite direction (upwards) to eject the fluid. Within the fluid are components called proppats, which could be sand or ceramics (Mooney, 2011). These do not flow out of the fractured target zones. Instead, they are left to keep the fractures open. Acidizing of the fluid also may have been done during preparation of the fluid. This is done by addition of hydrochloric acid and helps in cleaning the pores for the fluid to flow out well and the gas that will…show more content…
The extended holding of the waste fluid in the pits could lead to their seepage into the ground, especially if the pits are not lined with plastic. This contaminates the water sources around. In addition, any overflows, for instance caused by heavy rains, allows the fluid to contaminate water in the sources. Large volumes of fluid is required (thousands of gallons of water is used per well) and its disposal is an issue too (Schmidt, 2011). Proper disposal methods should be effected to ensure the water aquifers around do not get contaminated. 5. After analyzing the arguments for and against fracking, state your position about whether people’s concerns are warranted. Absolutely people’s concerns are warranted, these chemicals in our water supply have cancer causing agents that hinder health. References Else, H. (2012). Fracking splits opinion.
