The four functions of management model has been criticized as being irrelevant to today’s managers. Do you agree or disagree with the critics who question the relevance of this model? Explain your answer and support your position. In my opinion the four functions of management model is still very relevant to today’s managers. While there are many facets to management one constant is a manager’s ability to perform his or her responsibilities as he or she efficiently and effectively coordinate the work of subordinates. A manager’s responsibility is to collaborate with their employees to accomplish organizational goals (Robbins, 2010). Robbins (2014), defines management as, “…coordinating and overseeing the work activities of others so that their activities are completed efficiently and effectively”. At minimum, an effective manager must possess all four management functions which include, planning, organizing, leading and controlling. I might suggest that effective managers in today’s workplace must also possess the ability to collaborate. Collaboration is a nice companion to all four management functions. In today’s highly competitive, innovative and diverse workplace, an effective manager must embrace the ideas of his or her team. In order to achieve an organization’s goals, a manager must be prepared to use all four management functions. The four functions of management are in constant flux and work together to ensure an organizations mutual success. Initially, managers must effectively plan by establishing strategies and goals and developing plans to coordinate activities. Without a plan employees will not immediately recognize their purpose. An effective plan should also include the reasons why a strategy or tactic is important to the end result or goal.
