Foundations Paper Kathleen Young HSM/260 January 15, 2012 David LiJadu Foundations Paper The United Way of America was founded in 1887 by a rabbi, two ministers, a woman and a priest in Denver Colorado. The group recognized the need to address the welfare situation in the community. “Religious leaders founded the Charity Organizations Society, the first "United Way" organization, which planned and coordinated local services and conducted a single fund-raising campaign for 22 agencies (United Way, 2012).” The United Way envisions a world where all individuals and families achieve their human potential through education, income stability, and healthy lives. The mission of the United Way is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good. In 2008 the United Way initiated a 10 year program “Challenge to America” with the intention of achieving a series of goals by 2018. One of the goals is to reduce the amount of high school drop outs by half each year of the program. The focus is on strengthening communities, effective schools and strong families. This is done through the birth to 21 continuums. This continuum focus areas are enter school ready to succeed, read proficiently by 4th grade, successful transition to middle school, and graduate high school on time. The next goal in the United Ways 10 year program is to promote financial stability to lower income families. “The strategy is to address the obstacles that prevent hard working families from getting ahead financially, we launched the Financial Stability Partnership™, an initiative that promotes community-change strategies to help families meet their basic needs, while gaining the financial capability to plan for, and accomplish, their long-term financial goals (United Way, 2012) .” The focus areas in this program are families sustaining
