EBOLA EPIDEMIC IN WEST AFRICA An epidemic of ebola is ongoing on in West Africa.The outbreak began in Guinea in December 2013,but was not detected until March 2014 after which it spread to Liberia ,Seirra Leone,and Nigeria.The outbreak is caused by the zaire ebolavirus,known simply as the ebola virus.it is the most outbreak of ebola in terms of the number of human cases and deaths since the discovery of the virus in1976,with the number from the current outbreak now outnumbering the combined cases from all known previous outbreaks. Ebola isn’t as contagious as more common viruses like colds or flu.It spreads to people by contact with the skin or bodily fluids of an infected animal like a monkey ,chimp or bat.Then it moves from person to person in the same way.Those who care for a sick person or bury someone who has died from the disease often get it.Other ways to get the disease include touching contaminated needles or surfaces Early on,ebola can feel like the flu or other illness.Symptoms show up 2 to 21 days after infection and usually include the following High fever Headache Joint and muscle ache Sore throat As the disease gets worse,it causes bleeding inside the body,as well as from the eyes,ears and nose.Some people will vomit up blood or cough up blood,have bloody diarrhea and get a rash As of 20 August 2014, the World Health O rganization(WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control(CDC) reported a total of 2615 suspected cases and 1427 deaths.Many experts believe that the official numbers substantially understate the size of the outbreak because of families’s widespread reluctance to report cases.On 8 August,it was formally designated as a public health emergency of international concern.
