Describe the formal network of communication in an organization, division or department with which you are familiar. Discuss why you think the communication network has taken this form and how successfully it seems to meet the business’s needs. Organizational communication addresses how information circulates among the employees of a company. Generally speaking, knowledge passes from one person to another within a corporation by one of two ways: via an informal or a formal communication network. Both methods are used concurrently, with lower-level employees usually directing the informal network while top supervisors control the formal patterns of communication. Formal Communication * Well-established, usually along operational lines * Depends on certain established forms or “genres” in the company * Planned and managed * Communication takes place through the formal channels of the organization structure along the lines of authority established by the management. * Such communications are generally in writing and may take any of the forms; policy; manuals: procedures and rule books; memoranda; official meetings; reports, etc. Advantages & Disadvantages of Formal Communication: The advantages of formal communication are: * They help in the fixation of responsibility and * Maintaining of the authority relationship in an organization. The disadvantages of formal communication are: * Generally time consuming, cumbersome and * Leads to a good deal of distortion at times In our organization, the flow of communication follows the hierarchical approach from higher management to lower level management. Also, we receive the information from our higher management in hierarchical manner but several times the information is passed to lower level employees in open forums known as Baraza.
