Formal and Informal Language Experience

Write about your past formal or informal language learning experiences. Would you consider them to be effective or ineffective? Give reasons for your answer. My mother tongue is Bengali which is being spoken in our house since my childhood. I have done my preliminary education from Mumbai (Maharashtra) and Asansol (west Bengal). While schooling I’ve studied English as my first language and Hindi being the second. After I completed my secondary and higher secondary education from Kolkata wherein I got to further study Bengali i.e. my mother tongue. In high school, I opted for Elective English as another subject where I was able to improve my pronunciation and syllable stress and read more and appreciate english literature more. This paper further improved my vocabulary and use of the English dictionary. For the first time I was introduced to audio/visual aids to understand a play or a book. As English was my favourite subject during my school days after finishing my higher secondary, I applied for my B.A. Hons. In English Literature from J U, Kolkata, West Bengal. This course gave me the chance to explore engiish literature further. Where we had to keep on reading and understanding, critically examine different plays, poems, novels, short stories, journals and theories which opened a whole new world altogether. But after leaving university I saw myself wanting to know more and wanting to better myself still and as my passion for the language was too strong I decided to undergo a formal training of train the trainer program and attained greater knowledge of English. Since then I have been able to understand the differences in the various accents and their regions and further improve my English grammar.
