Courtney Collins Mrs.Gummerson English 9 period 2 10 September 2012 “The Scarlet Ibis” Is he going to live or die? That’s the question he asked. Will he ever have a normal brother ever or even a brother at all? In the story Doodle is a young boy that is born sick and very weak and whose parents and family never thought would live. They even built him a casket and put it in the barn for when he died so they would have a place for him. But Doodle’s older brother has faith in him and shows him the ropes and teaches him things that he couldn’t do on his own and they end up spending more and more time together and become best friends. “As I sit in the cool green-draped parlor, the grindstone begins to turn and time with all its changes is ground away and I remember Doodle.”(Hurst, 384). As the narrator says Doodle is the coolest brother a boy could have ever had. Thinking about it “Everybody thought he would die, except Aunt Nicey.”(Hurst, 384-385). Hurst is showing the multiple outcomes of Doodle’s life by foreshadowing how there are people who think he is going to die but then there are others who believe in him. Now, “It was bad enough having an invalid brother but having one who was possibly not all there unbearable.” So now Doodle’s brother whom Hurst is showing as the narrator through indirect characterization is scared he might never have a normal brother like all of the rest of his friends. The narrator showed that he would do anything if he could just have a normal brother anything to make his brother normal he would do. But as something’s changed in Doodle’s life and a sudden emotional breakdown began to occur when he witnessed a beautiful bird die suddenly in the blink of his eye. Doodle began to change and began to grow weak and suddenly fall apart slowly and pass away. Doodle life was at stake as a baby but he showed everyone he could do it and he wasn’t the William Armstrong everyone thought would die quickly he was Doodle the one who beat all odds and lived longer than anyone thought he would thanks to his brother who believed in him the whole time. As the conclusion, everyone thought Doodle ended up passing away however, showed courage and dedication by learning to walk and crawl. He showed everyone he could do it and that if you try you can achieve more than anyone else thinks you
